The Carisma Insight Incubator is an independent and impact-driven research organisation with a mission to do research that matters and that contributes to shaping the future of management by influencing the way people manage their businesses.

When we say that “we do management research” we mean that, once identified the management issue we must tackle, we immerge ourselves with the problem, collect data on what we observe, and use a mixture of rigorous methodologies, pure creativity and un-common sense to come up with solutions that nobody else have arrived at before.

The problems we tackle and the questions we aim to answer are usually complex, novel and difficult (sometime impossible) to solve.

The insight we generate is always actionable, normally uncommon and quite certainly against “common sense”.

The clients we work with are usually practitioners with an intellectual curiosity. They generally don’t have the time, patience or analytical skills to tackle the problem but a) they know they have a problem (or, as we like to call it, an opportunity) and b) believe in the power and benefits of “management science”.

"Innovators break the rules […] Trust them”

(Joseph Bordogna, deputy director of the National Science Foundation)

But why should you believe us?

So, we’ll let our customers do the talking instead.

The Big Idea

Our original big idea was that we could and should learn how to do research which has the potential to influence how people live and work. We started from the realisation that, as management researchers and practitioners, we are not doing nearly enough to advance the management practice and body of knowledge. Universities and university research is lagging far behind what happens in practice, rather than leading the way to innovation. We did something nobody else have done before us and which many thought was a crazy idea. We tried to learn how we could do more meaningful research in management by looking cross-disciplinary at fields like astrophysics, medicine, physics, music, journalism, etc.

The approach

We interviewed four Nobel Laureates, ten of the world’s top-50 management thinkers and one astrophysicist. To complement the interviews, we used information available from other sources, such as the Nobel Foundation, Universities’ websites, scholarly and managerial literature, studying numerous biographical notes, interviews, newspaper and magazine articles. In addition, we talked with two-dozen academic colleagues.
